DIY: Snag-Free Comb Attachment

12.28.2013
I stepped on the comb attachment that came with my Conair Pro Yellow Bird Blow Dryer and snapped a few teeth. This blow dryer is my one true love as far as hair appliances and was worth every penny. We have been together for about 2 years and it has worked like a perfect dream until stepping on the comb attachment caused this nightmare.

My first thought was to continue using it as is because most of the teeth were still in tact. But considering how the sharp edges of the shattered teeth could break my hair, I decided against it.

Here were my alternatives:

New Conair Pro Yellow Bird Dryer......$35 Too Expensive

New Conair Pro Dryer Universal Attachment from Sally's......$6 Too Flimsy

DIY on my current Conair Attachment......$0.00 Too Cool

I decided to repair the damage on my own and it was an easy do it yourself project.

All you need is a:
- Nail File
- 4 Way Nail Buffer Block

Steps:
1) File down the sharp edges with the nail file (This may take a few minutes)
2) Use the buffer block to smooth down and rough spots
3) Done! :)

Still works perfectly!

(This may even be useful with combs what have sharp edges, seams, or corners.)

What do you all think?

Updated Wash Day

12.23.2013
A few things have changed in my wash day but not a whole lot. I still shampoo with the Moroccan Argan Creme Shampoo from Organix, as well as deep condition with It's a 10 miracle hair mask. Next I follow up with I'ts a 10 miracle leave in conditioner (the bomb.com), and It's a 10 silk smoothing balm for straightening. Currently, I still straighten my hair about every 2-3 weeks but it's subject to change.

As for the Pre-Poo, I now use VO5 Strawberries and Cream Moisture conditioner instead of the Giovanni's Deeper Moisture Conditioner.

I love the Giovanni, but I ran out of it. Giovanni has great slip and the price is around $8 a bottle. I find that VO5 provides just as much slip and it's only $1 a bottle so I can afford to use a much as I want.

Seen toward the back of the picture, in front of the VO5, are two small bottles. One is an applicator bottle which has coconut oil in it and the other bottle with the pink pump top has olive oil in it. (Lol I have to refill it.)

Also, I still use honey and that awesome paprika mask I purchased off of Amazon for scalp stimulation. Check out my review HERE.

I combine all of these products inside of the empty Aussie Bottle pictured in the photo. I find that it less messy and easier to apply with the pump top. As for the measurements, I just eye ball the right amount. I use more conditioner than anything and only about a teaspoon of honey. (Its sticky)

The other change I've made, which is a fairly new one, is the tea rinse. I recently posted about it so I won't ramble on. The link is HERE. Bottom line is that it's lovely, I like it so far, and I haven't had any itchy scalp since I started it.

My current combination is chamomile tea with sprigs of rosemary. I want to try out black tea as well. Also, a reader suggested to add green tea and aloe vera juice, so I am really looking forward to that.

Other than this, everything is pretty much the same. Check out my last wash day post HERE.

Natural Hair (Texture Shots)

Here are a few texture shots from my last wash day on December 16th 2013. Disclaimer: My hair is weighed down with products from my Pre-poo and does not look the exact same way without product.

Product Review: Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor

12.20.2013
Purchased at: Sally's

Price: $1.29

Details: Aphogee Intensive Two Minute Keratin Reconstructor is a concentrated blend of keratin amino acids, botanical oils, and vitamins that does wonders to restore strength and softness to hair that requires a deep, penetrating treatment.

Directions: Gently shampoo hair with Aphogee Shampoo. Rinse thoroughly and towel as usual. Squeeze 1/2 ounce into palm. Using fingertips, work evenly through hair and into scalp. For maximum penetration, cover hair with warm towel, or plastic cap, for two minutes.

Ingredients: Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Behenamidopropylamine Behenatem Stearolkonium Chloride, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cocodimonium Hydrolyzed Hair Keratin, Hydrolzed Mucopolysac Charides, Sodium Coco Collagen Amino Acids, Wheat Germ Fatty Acids, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Arachidonic Acid, Squalane, Avocado Oil, Acetimide MEA, Panthenol, Wheat Germ Oil, Jojoba Oil, Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sulfur, Amodimethicone, Polyquaternium 10, Linoleamidopropyl PG Dimonium, Chloride Phosphate, Tallowtrimonium Chloride, Nonoxynol 10, Cocoyl Sarcosine, Sorbitol, Fragrance, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.

My Thoughts: I decided to try this product out since I've been straightening my hair about every 2-3 weeks. I thought maybe I needed it but oh how wrong I was. I've used the Aphogee 2-Step Keratin treatment in the past and I loved it (When I was transitioning). However, after my last wash day with this product, my hair was slightly stiff. I think I may have experienced minor protein overload. Needless to say, I was shocked at this change. For the nights that followed, coconut oil was my best friend, and was used to combat my stiff hair which finally softened by day 3. No more protein for a while for me guaranteed. I still think that this is a great protein treatment from Aphogee and most people who review it raves about it. Hmm maybe I missed it.

Other Things to Consider:
  • Recommended for relaxed, bleached, or tinted hair
  • Contains Sulfur and Wheat Germ oil which may soothe a troubled scalp
  • A little product goes a long way
  • Smells like Coconuts (smiley face)
  • This particular pack comes with 2 applications (Break away a pack for later)
  • Creamy and Rich Consistency
  • Cheap/Affordable

Keep It or Toss It: Staring at the other packet in the corner...fearful. Any suggestions?

DIY: Hair Rinse

12.17.2013
I absolutely love this scalp treatment. It's a nice hair rinse that I mentioned in my Hair Care Share (<--Link) about winter scalp treatments. The ingredients are simple and very cheap.

Ingredients:
2 sprigs of Rosemary
2 tea bags (Chamomile)

Place the ingredients inside a pot filled with water. Depending on how strong you want the tea to be, increase water amounts for tea that is less strong, or decrease water amounts for tea that is more strong. Normally, I just take a bottle of water and use it as the amount needed to put in the pot.

Once the water comes to a boil, I pour the entire mixture (tea bags, rosemary, and water) into a jar and allow the tea to cool completely.

I leave my tea in the refrigerator for about a day so the tea will be stronger. In order to use it in the shower, I simply transfer the tea back into a water bottle, and take it to the shower.

After shampooing and rinsing with faucet water, I rinse my hair again, this time, with the tea rinse. What's so great about it is that you can instantly feel the cooling effect of the Rosemary on your scalp (feels like how peppermint feels on the scalp except chamomile is milder). Also, Rosemary is is known to stimulate hair growth and chamomile soothes itchy scalp, which is an added bonus.

Next, I put my deep conditioner on top of my tea rinsed hair, sit for 30 mins, and continue my wash day as normal.

1. The Hair Doctor Hair Treatment for Hair & Scalp by Lush - The Hair Doctor by Lush is a 20 minute, deep-cleansing, herbal hair treatment for hair and scalp. I used a sample size of the Hair Doctor last year and it soothed my scalp like nothing else. The ingredients alone in this product makes it a winner. Some of the ingredients include: peppermint oil, chamomile oil, rosemary, extra virgin coconut oil, jojoba oil, and almond oil. This treatment is definitely worth a shot in the colder months for troubled scalps.

2. Tree Tree Oil + Olive or Coconut Oil - This combination is another treat. Tea tree oil is great for scalp irritations because it is an anti-fungal, antiviral, and antibacterial. In order to use tea tree oil, just mix a few drops with your favorite oil (Olive, Coconut, Jojoba, etc.) and apply it directly to the scalp for 30 mins. (If you purchase tea tree oil  that is an essential oil, dilute it with a carrier oil.)

3. Elucence Volume Clarifying Shampoo - A clarifying Shampoo can be good to use when trying to settle a troubled scalp, because it can rid the scalp of build up (Which may be causing the problem). Also, this particular shampoo has Salicylic acid in it, which can lift away dead skin cells. Also, other soothing ingredients include: sage, chamomile, and green tea. This was my favorite clarifying shampoo during my transition to natural.

4. Rosemary Sprig + Chamomile Tea Bag - Lastly, this scalp treatment is a tea rinse that can be applied to the hair and scalp after shampooing. Simply add water, a few sprigs of rosemary, and a few bags of chamomile tea in a pot and boil. After the tea rinse comes to a boil, turn it off, and let it cool. Once cool, strain it and use it on a wash day to rinse your hair. (Another tip would be to add your deep conditioner after the tea rinse and sit for 30 mins.)

My Thoughts: Everyone knows how awesome this product is or have heard someone else talk about how awesome it is. This has been the ONLY product I've used relaxed, transitioning, and natural. The It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product is a winner. I promote it so much. It really takes the labor out of detangling and instantly soften the hair. Its lightweight and a few pumps is all you need. At first glance, I thought it was a liquid spray but its more like a cream spray. I purchased this bottle in 2012 and its still a lot of product left. Bottom line, try it out and fall in love.

Other Things to Consider:
  • Sort of on the pricey side
  • Convenient spray pump
  • Cute Packaging
  • Smells Heavenly
  • Does exactly what it promises
  • Lightweight
Keep It or Toss It: Keeping it and putting a spar one in a time capsule.

Product Review: Nioxin Volumizing Reflectives Bliss Thermal Protector

11.23.2013
Purchased at: Pandora Beauty

Price: $18.99 + $7.99 (S&H)

Details: Bliss Thermal Protector is a virtually weightless leave-in conditioner and detangler for fine hair. Instantly repairs cuticle damage and increases tensile strength while restoring and maintaining hair's natural moisture balance. BioAMP adds dimension from inside the cuticle and strengthens the hair shaft. Triple-action formula provides thermal, mechanical and environmental protection to hair. Increases manageability of difficult to style hair.

Directions: Spray on towel dried hair. Comb Through. Do not rinse out. Style as desired. Can also be used on dry hair to refresh style.

Ingredients: Aqua/Water, Wheat Amino Acids, Amodimethicone, Soyethylmorpholinium Ethosulfate, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Propylene Glycol, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Polyquaternium-11, Dimethiconol Methonine, Dimethiconol Panthenol, Dimethiconal Cysteine, Parfum/Fragrance, Cystine bis-PG-Propyl Silantriol, Glycoproteins, Myristalkonium Chloride, Quaternium-14, Melanin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Polyquaternium-10, Citric Acid, Propylparaben.

My Thoughts: I wanted this product to work so badly. I heard and read all the comments about Nioxin Thermal Bliss from Megz, Salon Cabelo, and many others. I purchased this bottle a little over 3 months ago and just rediscovered it in my cabinet. The first time I used this product, I was transitioning. The state of my hair, after using Nioxin, was detangled and full of body. I loved this aspect of my hair at the time but my hair felt stiff. Upon rediscovering it again, November 2nd, I decided to give it a shot on my natural hair. Different hair equals different results right? Umm! I poured a little of the product in a spray bottle, and I only needed a few sprays. I had no problem detangling with this product, but my hair was still a bit stiff and hard. Considering how much I wanted to love this product, it didn't work out. Protein overload may have been the issue. I'm going to stick to my It's a 10 leave in from now on. Also, Nioxin Thermal Bliss is discontinued but I was able to find it online at Pandora Beauty (Link is above). Currently, Nioxin Thermal Bliss is out of stock on the Pandora Beauty Website but I've seen it being sold on Ebay, as well as Amazon.

Other Things to Consider:
  • It smells fair
  • Has a liquid consistency
  • Packed with Protein
  • Detangles
  • This particular bottle is huge. (16.9 fl. oz.)
  • A little goes a long way.
  • Lightweight
Keep It or Toss It: Sadly I'm going to give this product away to someone who can benefit from it more.

All About Hair: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly Twist Out

11.16.2013
  1. I've been natural for 2 years and a month.
  2. My hair type is 4B-4C.
  3. My strands are tightly coiled, kinky, thin, and shrinks up.
  4. My last self relaxer was September 25th, 2011, which is also my Granny's birthday.
  5. This is my second time going natural. I tried before in 2009 but I self relaxed after 5 months.
  6. I transitioned long term for one year and big chopped a few days before Thanksgiving in 2012.
  7. During my transition, my go to styles were sew-ins, buns, and Bantu knot outs.
  8. To hide the texture of my new growth, I would straighten it. (Confession...lol)
  9. My favorite natural hairstyle is my puff. Check it out HERE.
  10. I've NEVER succeeded at doing a proper twist out. The closest I've come to a good one only lasted a day but I was proud of it and took pictures.
  11. There was a lot of TRIAL & ERROR.
  12. I basically had to learn how to care for my hair all over again once I decided to go natural.
  13. I've been straightening my hair for YEARS, but I just recently got better at it thanks to a lady who straightened and cut my hair at Supercuts. She wrote down everything she did and I've followed that advice since.
  14. I wash and straighten my hair every 2 weeks and that has worked for me.
  15. I plan to wear my natural hair texture more often but I'm not sure of a date yet.
  16. One of my protective styles in the past was a wig but soon enough that proved to be a bad idea. (Thinning around my neck hairline, hot under the wig, dry hair, etc.)
  17. I don't take any vitamins for hair growth.
  18. I still haven't found a lightweight moisturizer that won't revert my straightened hair, or one that is moisturizing enough for my natural hair.
  19. My hair has a few split ends right now but I may hold on to them until the New Year. Lol
  20. I'm still learning, experimenting with , and recording the progress of my hair.

Hair of the Day: Head Band Twist

Simple hair style for today. It's a jumbo flat twist that I twisted forward to create the ridges in the front.
Happy Thursday.

VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries & Cream Moisturizing Conditioner

11.13.2013
Purchased at: CVS

Price: $0.88

Details: With soy milk protein. Rich formula. 2x stronger hair (When using VO5 shampoo & conditioner vs VO5 shampoo alone). Experience the health and vitality of soy milk protein formula for beautiful hair. Treat yourself to the fragrance of fresh-picked strawberries. Soy milk protein formula revitalizes dry, damaged hair. Moisturizes as it cleans leaving your hair silky, smooth and beautiful. Keeps color treated hair looking great.

Directions: After shampooing, apply to wet hair. Leave on as desired. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact with eyes flush thoroughly with water.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Cetyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Cetrimonium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Glyceryl Stearate, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Red 33 (CI 17200), Polysorbate 20, Propylene Glycol, Stearyl Alcohol, Steareth-21, Tocopheryl Acetate, Soymilk, Panthenol, Ascorbic Acid, Fragaria Vesca (Strawberry) Leaf Extract, Niacinamide, Biotin.

My Thoughts: I like this cheap conditioner. I used it on my last wash day as my conditioner in my pre poo. This conditioner has a lot of slip and helped me get rid of shed hair before shampooing. Also, this conditioner smells so nice and fruity. Yum. Only thing I feel this conditioner is lacking is thickness. It's a little runny but once I mix it with my coconut oil, olive oil, and paprika hair mask the problem is solved. Warning: Soft hair will follow.

Other Advantages:
- Easy to rinse out
- Softens hair
- Don't have to worry about saving product because of the price
- Full size bottle

Product Review: Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo - Shampoo Three

11.09.2013
Purchased At: SmartStyle (Walmart Salon)

Price: $9.99

Details: Specifically formulated to wash hair from the inside. Helps remove chlorine and impurities, increase inner strength and prevent immediate re-deposit. Ideal for swimmers to beat the 'chlorine green'. Excellent before deep conditioning.

Directions: Apply a small amount. Massage. Rinse. Suitable for daily use except on color treated hair.

Ingredients: WaterEau, Aqua , Sodium Laureth Sulfate , Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate , Urea , Magnesium Sulfate , Sodium Thiosulfate , Bisamino PEG/PPG 41/3 Aminoethyl PG Propyl Dimethicone , Glutamine , Tyrosine (L-Tyrosine) , Leucine , Cysteine HCl , Glycine , Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey Root) , Plantago Major , Triticum Vulgare (Wheat Germ) Protein , PEG 12 Dimethicone , Sodium Borate , Sulfated Castor Oil , Magnesium CarbonateCI 77713 , Tetrasodium EDTA , Trisodium EDTA , Disodium EDTA (Copper) , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Magnesium Chloride , Magnesium Nitrate , Fragrance , Limonene

My Thoughts: This is a really good clarifying shampoo. In the past I used Elucence and Kenra clarifying shampoo but I decided to buy this one for the price. After the first wash with the Paul Mitchell, my hair felt clean but not completely striped. However, I decided to shampoo with it twice and that was a big mistake. My hair felt like a cardboard box. Thankfully, I deep conditioned with heat and my hair was smooth and soft again. After blow drying and flat ironing, my hair was soft, flowing, and full of bounce. Also, the smell of the Paul Mitchell shampoo kind of reminded me of grapefruit.

Other Advantages:
  • No dry hair
  • A little goes a long way
  • Nice packaging
  • Does what it says it does
  • Eliminates all residue

Hair of the Day

11.07.2013
This was my protective style for the day. Old man winter is coming and its time to tuck away those ends for a hydration hibernation. Lol I came up with that on my own! Catchy right? It's a very simple hair style and it took only 7 minutes to complete! Great for a casual day or for going out. There are lots of tutorials of this hairstyle on youtube.

Comment below if you would like to see how I achieved this look.

Hair Product Shopping

11.05.2013
I picked up a few new products to incorporate into my regimen. I'm really excited to share because I haven't shopped for my hair in a while. Which is a good thing for me believe it or not. I could spend my entire funds on my hair, but discipline is key.

VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries and Cream Moisture Conditioner
The first one is the VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries and Cream Moisture Conditioner. Wow, try saying that five times fast. Lol, this is going to be my new conditioner for my pre-poo, I am no longer using Giovanni's Deeper Moisture Conditioner. However, its a great product to invest in and it's all natural. I used the VO5 during my last wash and loved it. It's cheap, moisturizing, and it smells good.

Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three Clarifying Shampoo
The next thing I purchased was the Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three Clarifying Shampoo. This is a nice product as well. I also used it on my past wash day, November 2nd, and I really liked it. However, one shampoo of this stuff is enough, I learned the hard way. This product was a lot cheaper than I expected it to be as well. As far as product build up, it was HISTORY.

More details about these products will be in my next two product reviews, as well as my review of my leave in conditioner. Click on the link to be directed to my product list. Click Me!

Happy Sunday

10.20.2013
Here is a photo of how I styled my hair today. It's a little bit difficult to see the length due to the fact that I have on a black shirt. (Lol brilliant idea right?) I simply combed it out of a wrap with a side part. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

The Curls Are Back!

10.11.2013
A little blurry...sorry!
My curls are back. Temporarily. For the past month, my hair has been straight due to flat ironing every two weeks and I enjoy a break from my curls every now and then. Recently, I oiled my scalp with olive oil to relieve itchy, dry scalp and my hair was so oily that I had no idea what to do with it.

My solution:
1.   Wet my hair with water
2.   Applied a mix of Eco Styler gel and Shea Moisture Curl             Enhancing Smoothie to my edges
3.   Brushed in the product with my Tangle Teezer
4.   Pulled back hair with a piece of stocking

This style is so easy and takes all of 5-6 minutes to achieve! I've missed my curls. This puff is my favorite go to style!
