(Co) Wash Day

HAIR UPDATE: I got my hair cut a week ago, 11/06/14, Post coming soon. Stay tuned. This cowash was done the day before I got my hair cut.
(I) Miracle 7 Deep Conditioner (II) VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries and Cream Moisturizing Conditioner (III) Coconut Oil {white container with orange lid}(IV) Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (V) Aubrey Organics GPB Balancing Conditioner (VI) Sweet Almond oil {belongs to my mother but I used some this time around lol} (VII) Honey

This is all I used to co-wash my hair and its actually what I use for my regular pre poo. My pre poo always includes oils, honey, and conditioner. There are a few new products in the photo, but the Miracle 7 and sweet almond oil belongs to my mom lol.  The Aubrey Organics is something I have had for a while but I only use it when I need protein. (Seldom lol)
I mixed a little of each product together inside the Shea Moisture jar pictured above. It was so very creamy and melted the tangles away from my hair. I loved it. I applied it like a perm in sections from scalp to ends. However, the miracle 7 kind of sat on top of my hair instead of penetrating it. I'm not a fan of conditioners that don't soak in but my hair was very soft.
I simply rinsed the conditioner out and de-tangled in small sections. Voila...this is the finished result. The next morning, I simply straightened my hair in order to get my hair cut. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of my hair style. (Coming Soon)

The Wash Day Experience

I Missed Blogging

"Oh My Snickers Bar With Fudge Brownies" I have been blog-less for about a month but I AM FINALLY BACK.

Long story short, I have been busy, busy, busy.

I got a new job, got engaged, joined a gym, started studying again for the fall semester in order to finish my undergraduate degree....etc. That's the bulk of it.

However, my blog has been on my mind constantly. I have so many plans and cosmetic changes to do.

Hair Update:
- I got my hair trimmed (Date in the side bar).
- I have slacked a lot on my hair care but I'm getting back in the swing of things.
- I am currently recovering from very dry/brittle ends. (Coconut Oil has helped a lot)

More Updates and posts to come. I really am glad to be blogging once again. Bare with me please.

Also, today marks MY 3RD YEAR NATURAL. Yayyyy. :)

Product Review: As I Am Coconut Cowash

Purchased At: Walmart

Price: $6.78 (Price Matched From Walgreen's)

Details: Cowashing is the way to cleanse your hair most of the time. It gently removes residue including all of the things you've used to style and maintain your coils and curls. Now it's time for a new beginning. This light creamy conditioning lotion spreads easily throughout to cleanse your hair and scalp. Detangling is wonderfully easy and rinsing is too. And there's much more. This cowash is different from any other because it contains a special blend of natural ingredients including saw palmetto and phytosterols that help promote healthy hair growth from the follicular level. Very economical. Use it whenever you choose. Gentle enough for daily use.

Directions: Wet hair thoroughly.  Rub a liberal amount within palms and distribute throughout hair.  Work product through hair and massage onto scalp as you would a conventional shampoo.  Carefully detangle hair with a wide-tooth comb, then rinse well.  Repeat only if necessary to remove excessive product build up.

Ingredients: Tangerine, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Saw Palmetto and Phytosterols

Aqueous (Water, Aqua Purificada, Purified) Extracts: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) and Citrus Reticulata (Tangerine), Cetyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Cetearyl Alcohol, PEG-40 Castor Oil, Stearlkonium chloride, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Phytosterols, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract, Quaternium-18, Potassium Sorbate, Fragrance/Parfum, Limonene, Methylisothiazolinone

My Thoughts:  I really do like this cowash. I am actually almost out of it as I type this blog post. It does a great job with detangling my coils, as well as cleansing my scalp.  This conditioner has tangerine extract in it and I think the oils from the tangerine is what helps cleanse the scalp and hair. Also, this cowash makes my hair soft and easy to finger detangle in the shower. I have zero trouble with using too much because a little spreads a long way.

This cowash smells delightful (like tangerines) and its really thick.  One downside to this product to me is the fact that it is packaged in a jar. I have a hard time finding places for it in my shower. I have actually tipped it over a few times and lost some of the product. However, the next jar I get, I'll simply transfer it to an empty bottle.

Also, this product rinses clear. It doesn't leave any films or residue on my hair. However, I've noticed my hair feeling kind of *squeaky clean* if I run the cowash through my hair too many times.  For example: If I cowash once, then rinse, and run the product through my hair again, I get a *squeaky feeling*.  Therefore, I stick to one wash only.

I use it as an alternative to shampoo in the hot summer months. However, it is a cleansing co-wash, so I follow it up with some type of moisturizing conditioner. Also, I minimize stripping by pre-pooing my hair first before co-washing.

Other Things To Consider:

  • No suds
  • Sort of runny and can tip over in the shower
  • Maintains moisture
  • Adds moisture
  • Removes product build up
  • Packaged in a jar

Last Trim: May 3rd, 2014

Front - 12 inches
Side - 10 inches
Back - 10.5 inches
Middle - 11 inches
Overall Length: (A little past) Shoulder Length (SL)

This length check was done a few weeks ago when I straightened my hair. I'm happy with my progress so far because I experienced a set back in May. I am itching to get a trim but I think I'll wait for October. Also, I recently purchased a LENGTH CHECK shirt from Just Grow Already. There was a free shipping sale, last week, for orders on tank shirts. I took advantage of it because it was on my wishlist. Now I can do "numbered" length checks. I going to keep doing the length checks with my measuring tape also, because it lets me know where my problem areas (places with breakage or slow growth) are.

Wash Day

It's feels like forever since I washed my hair. It's only been a couple of weeks but it's that time again. Time to say bye bye to the straight hair. (I wash my hair every 2 weeks when I wear it straight)
This week's wash day was very simple. I coated my strands and scalp with olive oil. Detangling was a breeze since my hair was already straight and easy to coat threw. The oil helped add slip as well.

Then I washed my hair with the As I Am Coconut Co-wash. I only used a couple handfuls of this Cowash to evenly distribute on my scalp and throughout my hair. Afterwards, I deep conditioned with Naturelle Grow Marshmallow Root Slippery Elm Bark & Natural Cinnamon Conditioner.

Instead of rinsing the conditioner out in 15 mins the way I normally would, I covered my hair with a shower cap and let it sit for a few hours. (Sat under the dryer for 10 mins as well)

The reason why is because I like to infuse as much moisture in my hair after it has been straightened for a while. Also, I skipped my pre poo and wanted to deep condition longer.

Lastly, I rinsed the conditioner out, shirt dried my hair, and added leave ins.

As for my style, I did a flex rod set and slept with the rods throughout my hair over night.  Correction: I tried to sleep in them all night but that didn't work out. I enjoyed what sleep I did get lol.

Today was a good wash day. :)

It's A 10 Miracle Leave In (Dupe)?

Unfortunately I ran out of my famous It's A 10 Miracle Leave In but I was fortunate enough to run across its twin in Sally's a while ago.  It's called Miracle 7 Leave in Mist. Lets do a comparison shall we?

My Thoughts:
I like both of these products and I can't really tell them apart. They both have the same spray top and consistency. They both do a good job with the 10 or 7 things that they promise to do for your hair. They both have the exact same ingredients with exception to a few.

As far as ingredients,  Miracle 7 is lacking in Eugenol (Perservative), Courmarin (Fragrance Enhancing Chemical), Cinnamal (Fragrance Enhancing Chemical), and Linalool (Fragrance) compared to It's A 10. Now I know why It's A 10 smells so good.

It's a 10 is lacking in Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Euterpe Oleracea Pulp Oil (Pulp of Acai Fruit), and Citric Acid (Perservative) conpared to Miracle 7.

So technically....Miracle 7 could claim to do 10 things the same as It's A 10 because it is only lacking in fragrance (it has citric acid as a preservative). It could also claim to have natural ingredients like Acai Fruit Extract.

They both smell pleasant. However, the It's A 10 lingers in my hair for a couple of days. That may have something to do with how much fragrance is in it. I do not really notice any lingering smell with the Miracle 7 but that is not a deal breaker for me.

Another plus for Miracle 7 is that it's slightly cheaper and contains more product than the It's A 10. However, if you are not near a Sally's, this product could be hard in your area. However, you can purchase it online.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one of these products.  It's A 10 is more popular but Miracle 7 does the same thing for less.  One thing that I love about them both is the softness and shine I get after application. I'm glad I know the difference between them now which isn't much.

Have You Tried Either Of These Leave Ins? Which One?

Wash Day

(i) coconut milk (ii) olive oil (iii) honey
I tried a different pre poo with coconut milk, honey and olive oil. After mixing the items together I poured it into an applicator bottle for easy distribution. The coconut milk did make my hair soft and this concoction smelled so good. (Almost good enough to eat...sort of) I liked it overall but it doesn't top my normal pre poo as far as detangling. I probably won't be incorporating this pre poo too often but it was a nice change from the mundane. Also, its best to use this mixture is when its cold because its more creamy instead of liquid and easy to apply without being runny.

This week I decided to straighten my hair and cheat on my six months curly diet. What else is new? LOL. Since I like to have weightless hair, I opted to shampoo my hair instead of co-washing it. I shampooed with Organix Moroccan Oil Creme Shampoo. After shampooing, I conditioned with my It's A 10 Miracle Hair Mask for a few minutes under a plastic cap.  I rinsed the conditioner out and dried my hair with a t shirt.

Next, I used my powerful straightening duo: Miracle 7 Leave In Mist, and It's A 10 Smoothing Balm. Normally I use It's A 10 Miracle Leave In but i'm all out.  Surprisingly enough, Miracle 7 works just as well as its identical substitute.

I blow dried my hair with my Yellow Bird by Conair. It is hands down the best blow dryer I have ever used and it has a comb attachment that I use as well. I bought it from Sally's a long time ago but I'm pretty sure they still sell it.

Lastly I flat ironed my hair with my KQC Flat Iron that I purchased from Flat Iron Experts. I've had it for a few years also and its works really well. I normally set the temperature between 350-370 and I get pretty sleek results on my natural hair. Although, with that being said, humidity isn't kind this summer so I wouldn't suggest anything higher than that temperature (Puffiness after a few hours or days is inevitable).

I sealed my ends with a little olive oil and that was it. I really am looking forward to wearing my hair straight for a while. It was a much needed change. I did notice a few split ends but they weren't extreme. Maybe I will not get a trim this time. Maybeeeeeee. Lol

Hair Of The Day: Bantu Knot Out

Happy Friday!!!! Whoohoo...! Here are my Bantu knot results from my wash day (Click HERE to check out my wash day). I like it overall. I used Eco Styling Custard (argan oil) and I'm pleased with the lightweight hold. My hair has slight sheen, its super soft, and NO PRODUCT RESIDUE. Don't you just love when that happens? I know I do.  For a more sleek look, I pushed the front of my hair back with a black goodie headband, and put a little edge control around my face.

Wash Day

(i) V05 moisture milk conditioner (ii) Honey (iii) Coconut Oil (iiii) Olive Oil (iiii) UBH Deep Conditioner
I added UBH deep conditioner to my pre poo this week for two reasons: protein & stimulation.  This conditioner has been on my shelf for months but I use it every now and again. It has peppermint in it which tingles my scalp and promotes hair growth. Also, it has protein in it which does not make my hair extremely hard; but strengthens all the same (which I totally love).

Pre Poo In Hair
I poured all these ingredients in my Aussie pump bottle and applied it like a relaxer (soothing root to tip).  I don't measure the amounts I use in my pre poo but I do use twice as much conditioner to prevent a runny treatment.  Next, I covered my hair with a plastic cap and sat under the dryer for about 30 minutes because I skipped my pre poo last week. Once I uncovered the cap, I had fluffy, hydrated hair.

Something I have been noticing is tangling in the shower when I rinse out my pre poo. I don't know how or why this is happening. I ended up snipping a few "fairy knots" in the shower because it was just that tangled. My hair, in its natural state, does tangle a lot but I'm trying to figure out the culprit. I hate to shampoo/cowash with tangled hair because it just tangles even more and sets up detangling chaos for later.  Thankfully, I can count on my Naturelle conditioner to detangle my hair but my shed hairs still get intertwined with my ends. Any suggestions?

After I rinsed my hair of pre poo, I washed my hair in the shower with my As I Am coconut co-wash, and deep conditioned with my Naturelle Grow Marshmallow and Slippery Elm deep conditioner. I really love using these two together because they compliment each other so well as far as moisture and detangling. I got out of the shower faster because these two took some of the work out of my wash day.

As for my leave ins, I choose my Miracle 7 leave in mist, and my It's a 10 silk express smoothing balm.  I don't normally use this balm unless I'm straightening my hair.  This smoothing balm really  blocks humidity like wearing a helmet.  However, I have a new style in mind that I want to try out and thought it would be best to use it any way.

Next, I applied eco styling custard to my hair for a slight hold.  This is my first time using this product so I'm excited to see what it can do. Normally I use eco styler gel for hold but I have ran out of it.

Lastly, I Bantu knotted my hair in somewhat small sections. I am currently air drying my hair or maybe its the next day when you read this and my hair is already dry.  Lol either way, I will do a Hair of the Day post to showcase what style came from it.

Hair Care Share

Our bodies are growing and changing all the time and our diet is what fuels it. These are fruits that can fuel your body as well as your hair. (There are numerous other fruits as well) Of course hair can seem to be a slow and gradual process.  However, as we put good in, we get good out.  These fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and nutrients that are essential to our bodies.

For example, vitamin B-6 in watermelons plays a role in the formation of red blood cells.  Red blood cells help give oxygen to our hair follicles.  Also, B-6 is one of the components in protein metabolism. Other B-6 rich fruits are grapes pineapple, and pomegranate. I love pomegranate so much lol.  Vitamin E is good for oxygen supply too.

Vitamin A, that is in Cantaloupes, is good for our immune system, skin, and hair. Vitamin C is great for the immune system as well.  Folate rich fruits help tissues grow and cells work. Niacin is good for cellular energy and blood flow. There are many fruits with these vitamins and are packed with other vitamins as well.

These fruits are great for smoothies, juicing, fruit popsicles, and everyday snacking. Happy Summer!

Product Review: Naturelle Grow Marshmallow Root Slippery Elm Bark & Natural Cinnamon Infused Deep Conditioner

Purchased at: I won this conditioner in a giveaway but it can be purchased HERE

Details: All of the natural herbs in Marshmallow Root, Slippery Bark & Natural Cinnamon Deep Conditioner play a key role in revitalizing and maintaining hair growth for long healthy hair. This product and all of its natural organic herbal benefits works great on all hair types, and will deliver real long lasting results." -Naturelle Grow

Directions: Part freshly washed, damp hair into large sections - apply conditioner with fingers. Cover hair with a plastic cap & allow the conditioner to soak for up to 30 minutes. Sit under a hooded dryer for an even more intense treatment. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Ingredients: Aqua, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, Orbignya oleifera (Babassu) Seed Oil, Ricinus communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Prunus armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Ulmus rubra, Althaea officinalis (Marshmallow) Root Powder, Cinnamomum cassia, sodiumlactate, Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol, fragrance.

My Thoughts: First, I should mention that this review is not sponsored. Yes, I won this conditioner but I was not coerced, advised, instructed, or enticed to do a review of any form on it. These thoughts are 100% my own and I love this conditioner. Lol...Moving on to the good stuff....this conditioner is HANDS DOWN THE BEST CONDITIONER I HAVE EVER USED. Like ever...(Taylor Swift voice).

I wanted to give this conditioner a few trial runs before my review because when I first used it I thought I loved it too much.  Lol I was thinking okay, give it a week, let the "love at first deep condition" simmer down, and try it again.  This second time around, I clarified my hair with shampoo to remove any type of product build up.And there it was again, love, love, love!

The first time I used it, I only used a tiny scoop and it was enough to evenly distribute throughout my hair. As you can see from the photo, this is all the product I've used after 2 washes (jar was filled to the top when I received it). Each time I used it, I only took out maybe two quarter sized amounts.  That was all I needed for my shoulder length, natural hair.

This marshmallow root conditioner is THICK. It kind of reminds me of actual marshmallow creme in the jar, that you can buy from the grocery store to make rice crispy treats with. Also, it have a creamy fluffy appearance and is silky to the touch. The smell of this product is pleasant and not overbearing at all. I think I smell cinnamon in it and some fruity notes too. There are also visible brown flecks in this may be cinnamon, marshmallow root, or elm bark but they are tiny.

This conditioner gets rid of tangles like nothing I've ever used before.  As soon as my conditioner coated fingers met my hair, all I noticed was instant softness and each one of my curls were separated and defined. The conditioner soaked right into my hair. No dripping, white coated strands, or anything.  It was just touchable soft. After rinsing, I felt not residue but my hair felt so light and fluffy.

I could run my fingers through my hair and that shocked me. My "It's A 10" miracle hair mask is great at de-tangling my hair but it doesn't quite sink into my hair the way this conditioner does. Even after my hair was completely dry after styling, I still felt the softness.  I've heard great things about marshmallow root and slippery elm but now I'm a believer.

Other Things to Consider:

8 oz. = $13.95 / 16 oz = $19.95 (Kinda pricey)
A little goes a long way
Detangles, Softens, Moisturizes
Jar packaging
100% Handmade
Filled to the rim...with conditioner

Keep It or Toss It: It's a keeper....

Wash Day

(i) Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three (ii) It's A 10 Miracle Hair Mask (iii)Naturelle Grow Marshmallow root Slippery Elm Bark & Natural Cinnamon Infused Deep Conditioner (iiii) Miracle 7 leave in mist (iiii) olive oil/coconut oil mix (in clear bottle with pink top)

I went swimming yesterday and decided to wash my hair with a clarifying shampoo. Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three removes chlorine from the hair, which makes it great for use after swimming.  After shampooing, I used my it's a 10 miracle hair mask to soften my hair. After rinsing, I applied my Naturelle Grow deep conditioner and my hair was soft on CONTACT.

I really can't say enough great things about this conditioner. After about 15 mins under my shower cap, I detangled my hair in the shower with my wide tooth comb, and two-strand twisted my hair in sections.  I normally never detangle my hair while its soaking wet, but my hair was super detangled from the conditioner already. I rinsed the conditioner out while my hair was twisted and dried my hair with a T-Shirt.

For my leave in, I chose to use my miracle 7 leave in mist and olive oil/coconut oil mixed in a bottle. (Miracle 7 is a dupe for It's A 10 Miracle Leave in) I untwisted each twist, applied leave ins, and re-twisted. Then I lightly blow dried each twist with my Yellow Bird blow dryer with comb attachment.

Lastly, I simply brushed my hair into a ponytail using my tangle teezer. Then used a mesh bun to mold my hair into a bun. I didn't use any product to smooth my hair which is why it's not as smooth as it could be. Still nice though because I haven't worn a bun in a while. Different but nice. Voila....bun perfected.
